One of Twitter’s top executives has shed light on how the app has recently received a surge in hate mail across the board.
The news comes just days after billionaire and free speech enthusiast Elon Musk took control of the app’s leadership and operations.
Not only did he fire the company’s top four executives, but he also showed the CEO the door. And now, he is the boss of the firm. A lot has happened since his arrival and more layoffs are planned as he tries to make the platform a better and more useful space for everyone.
But seeing the company report an increase in hate content after his arrival isn’t the best feeling in the world, especially when you’re just starting things out and want to incorporate more changes.
Twitter’s security chief says Elon Musk is reconsidering the permanent ban clause and is also creating its own content moderation tips to circumvent such issues. Musk also promised that he would oversee such issues related to content moderation, so that people can now express their opinions without fear of being banned.
But despite all these statements, the results are not what Musk had hoped for as hatred continues to surface against the new CEO. Additionally, Twitter’s security chief says he and his team were surprised to see how often such content appeared, and have been addressing the problematic issue since Saturday.
During this short period, the company was left with no choice but to remove at least 1,500 accounts because it was trying so hard to manage the concerns. Such accounts have been modified in a way that has made their reach close to zero.
More details on the matter talked about how this increase was partly due to a trolling campaign. This is where many bad actors continued to post repetitive content to spread nothing but hate and malice. Therefore, they were deleted accordingly.
The news comes as Twitter recently restricted its own team of security officers, as confirmed by Bloomberg recently, from gaining access to its internal moderation tools. Therefore, such people can no longer block or treat those who post content on the app.
But platform security says it’s quite normal for many firms going through a transition to behave this way. To put things into perspective, Twitter says that 215 racial slurs are reported every second and should therefore be blocked. This was a new record for the application.
Meanwhile, some activists went into detail about how new threat actors were again experimenting with ways to cause more damage to the app since Elon Musk’s takeover. They were seen tweeting controversial things like homophobia and related posts with anti-Semitic themes as well.
Recently, the billionaire owner caused so much controversy when he posted a so-called conspiracy related to the recent attack on Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband. And the link he posted was from a website that is famous for sharing fake news across the board. So, as you can see, it is a completely debatable issue.
