Twitter Rolls Out Its ‘Unmentioning’ Option That Allows Users To Escape From Unwanted Conversations / Digital Information World

If you happen to be looking for an easy alternative to leaving a Twitter chat that you feel is no longer serving a purpose, well, this could be your lucky day.

Twitter has recently launched a new ‘not to mention‘ feature on its platform where users can get rid of any conversation they feel has become toxic or is pointless to continue.

The untag feature not only untags a user from any particular tweet, but also prevents others from tagging the same user in the future, while disabling any kind of notification alerts related to the conversation.

The news was announced by the company on Monday claiming that the newly introduced ‘unmentioned’ functionality works by letting users log out with a simple click or two. In this way, it adds a lot of convenience to users as they don’t have to go through the hassle of blocking someone on a particular link.

Users can see the new updated feature as a log out button from their social media account which can be used whenever the need arises. Just press the button to the right of your reply in the notifications tab. Then, press leave this conversation.

Once this is done, the system will automatically view the change as an untag option and while the username remains, they will not be tagged in tweets or replies.

At first, many thought that the new change is definitely a positive effort as it gets rid of two very common and annoying issues in the app.

For starters, those who have a large account full of supporters will find that some can offer rude comments about them and it turns into a huge online debate with the user being tagged over and over again.

Second, the change would also relieve the annoyance associated with those cryptocurrency-related tweets where users can be tagged. And that in turn lines up a whole chain filled with spammy and fake accounts that put emojis and a bunch of other trickery related to the topic.

While Twitter has already introduced its own mute option for this conversation, the latter fails to get rid of people who repeatedly mention users, although it does manage to clean up their notifications section.

It’s pretty clear what Twitter wants to do with this new feature. The platform is looking for new ways to give its users a greater degree of control in terms of fixing annoying parts of their in-app experience. After all, what’s worse than receiving information you wish you never had to worry about.

In 2020, Twitter tried to introduce a new feature that controlled settings options in a conversation. This allows you to limit who can reply to a user in a particular tweet. Moments after that, we saw the app introduce a security feature that saw a seven-day ban for those who used derogatory language in the app.

This includes toxic remarks, offensive language, hate speech and even uninvited mentions. And let’s not forget a new Circles functionality it’s currently testing, which allows you to limit your audience to a particular tweet, which remains private to everyone else.
