Auto-rickshaws are a common sight in our country. We are also aware of such modes of transport in a number of countries throughout Asia and Africa. However, auto-rickshaws in Europe are fairly unheard of. Well, the Gwent police in the UK have introduced rickshaws into the country. If you thought they were starting some kind of newly introduced three wheeler ride service, you are absolutely wrong. Three-wheeler rickshaws will be used by the police to patrol parks and walkways.
“They were on display at our Behind the Badge day, giving local people the chance to see them up close and hear more about how they will be used. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive with parents telling officers they would feel safer knowing there was support for young people out on the night and from women who could think of an occasion when a tuk-tuk would have been a welcome sight, said Chief Inspector Damian Sowrey, according to BBC. Reports also said rickshaws would soon be seen in areas such as Newport and Abergavenny in Monmouthshire.

Mahindra also took to Twitter to talk about introducing its auto-rickshaws to the UK police department. It said: “Cars are used as public transport but Gwent Police have different plans for them. They want the e-automation to be used as ‘safe spaces’ where crimes can be reported, help sought and advice given crime prevention. We are proud to be part of such a noble initiative.”
Meanwhile, Twitter users had plenty of observations to make. “Funny to watch someone get chased by this,” wrote one. Another said, “At least the criminals will be too busy laughing to get away.” A third person commented, “Haha not sure about the impact but at least it’s a lot of fun tuk-tuk rickshaw in Wales. Lol”
