Jaishankar began his UNGA visit with a meeting with Latin American counterparts under the India-Celac Quartet (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) with New Delhi deciding to step up engagement in the region.
India-UAE-France had in July held their first trilateral meeting to explore possible cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, including maritime security, blue economy and regional connectivity and food and energy security. Monday’s tripartite comes shortly after the French foreign minister’s visit to India.
The three sides exchanged perspectives on the Indo-Pacific region at the July meeting and explored potential areas of trilateral cooperation, including maritime security, humanitarian aid and disaster relief, blue economy, regional connectivity, cooperation in multilateral forums, energy security and food, innovation. and startups, supply chain resilience and cultural collaboration and people to people. They also discussed the next steps to be taken for the further development of trilateral cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.
Celac was represented by Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero, Guatemala’s Mario Adolfo Bucaro Flores, Trinidad and Tobago’s Amery Browne and Colombia’s Deputy Minister for Multilateral Affairs Laura Gil Savastano. The meeting took stock of developments in post-pandemic economic recovery and agreed to work closely in sectors including trade, agriculture, food and energy security.
