United National Congress » Opposition Leader Diwali Message

Sita Ram.

Today, as families across Trinidad and Tobago and around the globe gather to celebrate Diwali, I am mindful of the simple message of the festival, that light will always overcome darkness; hope will overcome despair.

I offer warm Diwali greetings to our entire nation because regardless of our cultural background, today is a special day for our multicultural nation when we join our Hindu friends to honor the victory of good over evil.

I know that many of our citizens are happy to be able to once again celebrate the Festival of Lights with a sense of normalcy, as we have all endured two years of separation due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

For me, my family, and my UNC family, it has been wonderful to be able to pray together, prepare our delicious meals and desserts, and help our brothers and sisters in need. I have seen my fellow citizens all over this country demonstrate the humanity, humility and generous spirit that makes us Trinbagonians.

However, in the midst of this joy, our beloved nation is shrouded in sadness in the dark as we face growing poverty, an out-of-control crime problem and a careless administration that has now been exposed as a corrupt and evil regime.

The opposition will continue to shine a light on their dark deeds and we will continue to hold this government to account.

I know that the divine light burns strongly in the hearts of our citizens. Together, united, we can lead our country out of this darkness.

Even in the darkest of times, remember that if the light of a deja can dispel the darkness around it, what a bright light we can create if we unite to fight against the dark forces around us.

May this auspicious occasion of Diwali light up all our lives with joy, health and prosperity.

Happy Diwali!
