United National Congress » TANCOO: Government’s priorities screwed up

“The Rowley government shows once again its total disconnection from the needs of the population. Earlier this week, PNM Housing and Urban Development Minister Camille Robinson Regis announced that the government intends to spend $7.5 million to celebrate the country’s 60th anniversary of independence. This comes at a time when the same government claims it has no money to fix the roads or provide medicine, medical treatment or rescue operations for citizens, or food support for children in need,” said Oropouche West MP Davendranath Tancoo. .

A few months ago the government claims to have spent 15 million dollars to organize a mini-carnival for a few people to celebrate, wine and jam.

MP Tancoo stated that “Finance Minister Colm Imbert seems fully capable of finding money to celebrate, but not to meet the needs of the population. I recommend that instead of spending $7.5 million to celebrate, that the money be applied to patients requiring emergency heart surgery and other life-saving surgeries, that you properly fund the Children’s Life Fund or fix the roads and drainage to Oropouche West.

Tancoo complained that “Today there are landlords threatening to evict councilors from their offices because the Corporation has no money to pay rent arrears, but the Minister of Finance and his government are giving funds for country concerts and firework displays. The priorities of of this government are completely broken.”

Among the events proposed for the month-long Independence celebrations are a traditional military parade and fireworks display, three cultural concerts, a road show to go on a concert tour of the country, a 3-D show of Whitehall in concert, several song and video competitions . , multimedia art galleries in several locations and the unveiling of a Carlyle Chang artwork at Piarco Airport.

Tancoo had this message for the government: “Put food before party and people before party. Give citizens better roads, water, medical care and a safe place to educate and raise their children. This would be the best Independence Day of our country!”
