Utah State Enters 2022 Season with Tremendous Knowledge and Talent at Quarterback

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State football held its 18th fall camp practice Wednesday morning, and the Aggie quarterbacks bring plenty of knowledge and talent to the field heading into the 2022 season. In fact, USU probably has more talent and depth here than every other team in the Mountain West.

“We’ve had a solid camp and there’s a lot of competition in the room,” the second-year offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach said. Anthony Tucker. “We have a lot of different experience levels. Logan (Bonner) is definitely back. Cooper (Legas) gained a ton of experience last year. Levi (Williams) has come in and played a lot of college football. Then, we have a really talented young quarterbacks. We’ve had a really solid camp and we’re going in the right direction.”

The highlight of this group is the graduate Logan Bonner, who set five single-season school records during the 2021 season with 3,628 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, four touchdown passes in three games, four touchdown passes in six games in a season and 2.57 touchdown passes per game. Bonner, who was in his first season with the Aggies in 2021, finished the year completing 263-of-429 (.613) passes to rank fourth in school history in completions, sixth in attempts and seventh in completion percentage. He also produced 3,694 yards of total offense to rank as the second most in school history. Additionally, his 36 touchdown passes are tied for fourth-most in MW history and seventh-most in school history, while his completion percentage ranks third all-time at USU.

Bonner was also named the Offensive MVP of the MW Championship Game as he was 29 of 42 passing for 318 yards and four touchdowns, setting season highs in both completions and attempts, not to mention setting passing records. championship games for most passing touchdowns and most. the strokes responsible for (4).

“Obviously, it’s the last fall camp for me and I’m excited to be here with the guys,” Bonner said. “Overall, the group has done really well. They’ve done a good job of learning every day and pushing each other. We have a lot of talent and a lot of knowledge in that room. It’s really special to have guys that have played like this, including myself, Cooper, and Levi. It’s very rare to have a room like that that helps the team.”

Utah State also returns Junior Legas, a junior who led the team to its first-ever win against a Power 5 opponent in 2021. Legas, who was playing in just his second game ever, was 11 of 20 passing for 171 yards and two touchdowns in USU’s Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl win.

Another returning player here is sophomore Garrett Larsen, who will enter his third season with the Aggies this fall but has not appeared in a game.

Utah State also added a veteran transfer to this group in Williams, a sophomore who spent three seasons at Wyoming (2019-21) after playing in 18 games with 12 starts. Overall, Williams was 150-of-278 (.540) passing for 2,210 yards with 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while rushing for 763 yards on 168 carries (4.5 ypr) and 13 touchdowns during his time with the Cowboys. Williams was also named the Offensive MVP of the 2021 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl after he rushed for a career-high 200 yards on 16 carries (12.5 years) and a career-best four touchdowns against Kent State, while also completing 9 of- 11 passes for 127 yards and another touchdown.

Utah State also welcomes back two freshmen in this group Bishop Davenport (Spring, Texas/Spring HS) and Chase Back (Orem, Utah / Orem HS).

Utah State will open the 2022 season on Saturday, Aug. 27, when it hosts Connecticut at 2 p.m., in a game that will be nationally televised on Fox Sports 1. USU then plays at Alabama on Saturday, Sept. 3 and waits Weber. State on Saturday, Sept. 10, before starting MW play at home against UNLV on Saturday, Sept. 24, in a game that will be nationally televised on the CBS Sports Network at 5 p.m.
