Los Toritos de Cayey and Peces Voladores de Salinas picked up wins Friday in the rematch of the Double A Superior Baseball semifinal series.
Cayey beat Libertadores de Hormigueros 2-1, who are 3-0 in the A semifinals.
This is the fifth straight win for the Toritos, who have won 11 of their last 12 games. All-Star shortstop Freddie Cabrera defended and extended his undefeated record, going 11-0 on the year. The righty went the entire way with three hits allowed and one unearned run. He struck out five and walked none.
Nelson Molina’s triple gave Torito its final lead in the bottom of the sixth.
Libertadores shortstop Brian Marrero suffered his second shutout of the year and the series, running his record to 9-2. In eight innings they hit four hits with two runs.
For their part, the Flying Fishes fired their bats to defeat the Guaynabo Mets 15-6 with 20 hits, including four home runs, two of which were by catcher Joseph de la Torre. The other two houses were connected by Raúl Febus and Pedro Nazario. Salinas leads 2-1 in the semifinal B series, which has been dominated by the home teams.
Febus led in RBIs with four. The first home run of the game was hit by Nazario to plate Salinas in the same first inning. Luis Rodríguez also stood out with four hits in the same number of at-bats and Gerardo ‘Coco’ Velázquez 6-4, in his return to the lineup.
Reliever Nelson Rodríguez was the winner and star lefty Héctor Hernández was the loser, pitching just three innings. Guaynabo’s pitcher got up early with seven hits and five runs. Meanwhile, Rodríguez replaced star right-hander Yadiel Rolón, who left the mound in neck-deep water. They hit him with eight hits with six innings.
