Is one Carnival’s worst nightmare comes to life. A drop tower ride at a carnival in India crashed to the ground, falling 50 feet before crashing to the bottom. Several people suffered injuries from the fall and were rushed to nearby hospitals.
The incident took place on Sunday evening at the Dussehra Ground Park in Mohali, a populous city in Punjab. The ride in question is a spinning disc that travels down a vertical pole and had about 50 people on board. Horrifying video captured by people in the crowd shows the fairground ride spinning out of control and spiraling onto the ground before crashing as riders and spectators I screamed in horror. After the crash, the riders were thrown from their seats by the crash, despite being strapped in.
At least 10 people, including five children, were seriously injured but are now in a stable condition. according to media reports. The traveling carnival was supposed to run until September 11, but has since been closed. Officials are currently investigating the carnival’s security clearances. “We will find out how this happened. It seems there was a technical problem,” Sunny Singh, the organizer of the carnival, told Hindustan Times. “We organized several parties but this never happened. We will cooperate with the police and the administration.”
Ride carnivals must split the rides and put them back together at the next location. But that doesn’t mean carnival rides are any less safe than their stationary amusement park counterparts, the same safety standards must be strictly followed and incidents like this are rare. But given the heavy impact of a fun trip gone wrong, they are terribly persecuted.
