Singer-songwriters Cheyne Jones and Ian ‘iWeb’ Webster have added another Pic-O-De Crop wreath to their shelf.
The dynamic writing duo – The WaterStreetBoyz – have been anything but quiet during the pandemic. In fact, they collaborated with numerous musicians and artists across the region to deliver an anthem of hope, with lyrics saying that together we will get through COVID.
In the early hours of this morning, Saturday, July 30, Quon won his first Pic-O-De Crop title with Animal Kingdom, which came from working with WaterStreetBoyz.
Speaking to one half of the couple, Jones, Loop revealed what it feels like to have the winning words.
Jones said, “The WaterStreetBoyz are delighted with the results in the Pic-O-De Crop finals.”
Having witnessed the evolution of Quon, who was one of five former junior monarchs to go up against the veterans this year, Jones explained, “It’s incredible to see the phenomenal growth of Quon, who just a few years ago was not pass it. Junior Monarch preliminary stage. Fast forward to 2022, and he has two new monarch titles and now the prestigious title of Calypso Monarch of Barbados. To say we are proud is an understatement.”
But Quon’s win was just the icing on the cake; the icing on the cake was the fact that WaterStreetBoyz took three of the top four spots after the judges returned at the end of the Finals performances.
Jones said this is “more than we could have hoped for and we feel blessed.
“However, the results for us mean not only what the judges say, but the general public’s response to the music, and we are delighted with the overwhelming appreciation we have received.”
Reflecting on last night leading up to today, he shared, “Iweb was his usual fantastic self on the final stage and TC gave the hugely popular Kaiso Reporter a good go. Teri has won the hearts of many Bajans and people continue to say that she is one to watch. Doyenne showed Barbados what he is capable of in the big league. We are extremely pleased with the way our singers performed last night.”
Speaking about the preparation leading up to the final results, he said that for an involved songwriter like himself, it was just as rigorous as it was for the singers.
“The last few months have been very demanding but extremely rewarding. I’m very hands-on with the creative process in terms of helping artists interpret the songs and communicate the message so it resonates. So this involves going to rehearsals, taking long phone calls discussing the content and looking at their performances for what can be improved; seeing what lines the crowd responds to and changing the lyrics to see what works,” he explained.
