Watford Museum image shows carnival day traffic in 1960

This week’s photo shows a scene from carnival day in the early 1960s, and specifically the traffic lane.

of Watford Observer is pleased to share photos from Watford Museum’s archive, and this week’s photo requires close inspection to determine which way it’s facing.

The museum’s volunteer archivist, Christine Orchard, said: “This congested traffic scene is from the early 1960s and looks from the town hall roundabout towards Hempstead Road.

“This being a carnival day, I understand that traffic levels like this were very common on such days. The scene is a little hard to make out as the usual landmarks are dark, but the wall on the left is the one near the Horns. To the right is the library, but hidden from view. In the middle, on one of the lampposts is a sign that says ‘Bathrooms’. This image is part of the Museum’s Bob Nunn Collection.”
