On Wednesday, November 27, during Women’s Big Bash League 2024 (WBBL) The knockout match between Sydney Thunder AND The Hobart Hurricanes at Drummoyne Oval in Sydney, an unusual dismissal from the Sydney Thunder player Shabnim Ismail of the Hobart Hurricane opener Ruth Johnston attracted attention.
The sudden dismissal of Ruth Johnston
In the third over of the Hurricanes’ innings, opener Johnston was dropped in rare and unexpected fashion. Facing Ismail’s medium-pace delivery on the right-hand side, Johnston attempted a pull shot but failed to connect properly. The ball clipped the edge of her bat and flew straight up into the air, hovering above the crease. As Johnston, seemingly unaware of the ball’s trajectory, focused on attempting a single, her partner Lizelle Lee denied escape. Before Johnston could pull to safety, the ball came off his high arc and crashed into the stumps, dismissing him for 5 runs off 6 balls, including a boundary. The odd dismissal added to the drama early on in the match.

Sydney Thunder chase the target with confidence
After electing to bat first, Hobart Hurricanes managed to post a total of 126 runs for the loss of six wickets. Captain Elyse Villani stood out with a gutsy knock of 53 runs, anchoring the innings amid continued advances by the Sydney Thunder bowlers. However, the rest of the batting line-up struggled to gain momentum against a disciplined bowling attack.
In reply, Sydney Thunder staged a composed chase, reaching the target of 127 runs with six wickets in hand. Captain Phoebe Litchfield led from the front with a crucial innings of 46 runs, earning her the Player of the Match title. Contributions from the rest of the batting order ensured that the Thunder achieved the target in the current style that the Thunder will face Brisbane heat in the Challenger match, scheduled for November 29 in Brisbane.
