After losing the 2000 Women’s World Cup, the West Indies returned to the world stage in the 2005 tour to South Africa.
The tournament took place from March 22 to April 10.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Power, playing in its third World Cup, led the West Indies in the team of the tournament.
In their first match, West Indies were 18 for 2 chasing 179 for victory when rain washed out their match in Pretoria.
In the second match, Phillipa Thomas took 4 for 42 to restrict hosts South Africa to 169.
West Indies were in trouble at 135 for 8 before Envis Williams (28) and Thomas (11) put on 30 for the ninth wicket.
However, in the final over, with five runs to win, Williams was dismissed off the second last ball before Thomas was bowled to give South Africa a narrow one-run victory.
West Indies lost their third match to Australia by 79 runs, before bouncing back to beat Sri Lanka by 8 wickets with T&T’s Nelly Williams scoring 70.
The regional women’s team then won their second match in a row, defeating Ireland by 8 wickets with Juliana Nero scoring 71.
Needing wins in their last two matches to reach the semi-finals, West Indies Women lost to India by 8 wickets before their last match went down without a ball being bowled.
West Indies Women finished fifth in the group stage, failing to qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament.
Australia beat India by 98 runs in the final at SuperSport Park, Centurion to win their fifth title.
Apart from captain Stephanie Power, other T&T players in the tournament included future FIFA referee Shane de Silva, Anisa Mohammed, Envis Williams and Nelly Williams.
