Veteran opener Evin Lewis is back as West Indies announced their 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup on Wednesday, September 14. Defending champions Australia will host the global T20 competition, which will begin on October 16.
The squad also includes two uncapped players in Yannic Cariah (right-arm long spinner) and Raymon Reifer (left-arm batting all-rounder). However, surprisingly, the West Indies have left out experienced all-rounders Andrew Russell and Sunil Narine.
Cariah, who plays for Trinidad & Tobago and Trinbago Knight Riders, and made his ODI debut last month. Reifer, on the other hand, has already represented the West Indies in the ODI and Test formats.
Nicholas Pooran will lead the team, while all-rounder Rovman Powell will be his deputy. The two-time champions will be hoping to put up some good performances and lift their third T20 World Cup title.

“It’s a team that will compete” – West Indies chief selector Desmond Haynes
Cricket West Indies (CWI) chief selector Desmond Haynes is quite confident with the squad and said that this team has a good mix of youth and experience. Haynes also added that they have given a lot of importance to the CPL performances. He declared:
“We have selected a mix of youth and experience to represent the West Indies,” said Desmond Haynes, CWI Chief Selector. “In the selection process, we have been aware of the ongoing CPL and have seen players who have played very well.”
“I said at the start of my tenure that I would be interested in giving players the chance and I think I’ve been consistent in doing that. I believe that it is a very good team that we have selected and it is a team that will compete, given that we have to qualify from the first round in the Super12”, he added.
