The White House’s official Twitter account set several Republican lawmakers on fire Thursday (August 24) after announcing a major student loan forgiveness plan for millions of Americans.
High-profile GOP congressmen and candidates criticized the measure for being “unfair” to taxpayers and those who have already paid their debts. In response to the backlash, the White House gives a rare round of applause to five Republicans in a tweet.
Officials exposed that these politicians are forgiven hundreds of thousands of dollars – for some, millions – in Paycheck Protection Program loans.
“For our government to say okay, your debt is completely forgiven. It’s completely unfair,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said from Georgia during an interview with Newsmax.
The White House citation tweeted the clip, saying simply: “Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene was forgiven $183,504 in PPP loans.”
Officials also called the following representatives:
Congressman Vern Buchanan described the plan as “reckless… a giveaway” and forgave $2.3 million in PPP loans.
Congressman Markwayne Mullin saw $1.4 million in PPP loans forgiven, claiming it didn’t want farmers, teachers and small business owners to pay off the debt of doctors and bar colleges.
Congressman Kevin Hearn received $1 million in PPP loan forgiveness, but says the government is forcing working-class Americans to “pay for other people’s college degrees.”
Congressman Mike Kellywho called the student loan forgiveness plan “bad policy,” received $987,237 in clean PPP loans.
As of Friday morning (August 26), only Mullin has responded directly for the White House’s simple statement to:
“Another ignorant attack from a career politician who has never created a single job. 74 days before the midterm elections, Joe Biden is targeting business owners to protect their employees from government shutdowns. President Trump has always supported American workers and job creators.”
PPP loans were approved in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic to help struggling American businesses stay afloat. While many small businesses benefited from the program, there were times when large companies ended up receiving millions of dollars from the federal government.
Under the new student loan forgiveness program, Americans earning under $125,000 a year will see $10,000 written off their debt. If you received a Pell Grant while attending college, that’s another $10,000 waived. Student loan payments are also suspended until December 31, 2022. The White House will provide more information on how to apply before the end of the year.
