In his first international outing, Cariah showed quite good control with the ball, taking 1 for 49 in nine overs, playing a part in the West Indies’ only ODI win at home last summer.
He also led the West Indies Emerging team to their first Super 50 title in December 2019. In the final against the Leeward Islands, Cariah made 34 and followed it up with figures of 5-1-8-3, including the wickets of Amir Jangoo , Keacy Carty and Jahmar Hamilton. Cariah established his leadership qualities with that win and with an eye towards improving future leaders, West Indies boss Desmond Haynes named him as the captain of the WICB XI against Bangladesh.
Walsh Jr was integrated into the West Indies line-up in 2019 after he emerged as the best wicket-taker in the CPL that year. His star continued to rise, even outside the Caribbean, when he was brought in by Rajasthan Royals to play the nets, but he seemed to hit his ceiling soon. In the most recent season at home, he struggled for control and often left opponents’ shots in the wind. And with Sunil Narine not really happening, the selectors wanted something different and that’s Cariah. Having not played a T20 for over four years and never having played T20Is, he is a bit of a novelty in the West Indies attack.
You are right. He is not signed with a CPL franchise at the moment, but that hasn’t stopped the selectors from turning him in. They will be hoping that, despite the big step, he can use the experience that has brought him here, including bowling alongside West Indies’ T20I front-line spinner Akeal Hosein at the Queen’s Park Cricket Club in Trinidad .
What they said…
“I think the intensity… The speed of the game and the opponents change, but the game remains the same. You have to see the ball and play the ball. You have to make long goals, you still have to understand the conditions and the opponents. I think it’s just the intensity – the bowlers may hit their mark more often than not, but you have to play the same. It’s still the same process. I think it’s just the intensity.”
Yannic Cariah on the key differences between regional and international cricket after scoring a fifty against New Zealand.
“It is a bit unfortunate that Yannic is not playing in the CPL, but we have no control over who will pick who for the CPL competition. We were very impressed with the games we have picked him, starting with the A team. He Bowling very well and then we gave him a chance to play against New Zealand in the 50-over competition. We were very impressed with him. One thing that a lot of people might not know is, yes, even though he is playing well, we “I have a lot of respect for his hitting. We think he’s a guy who can run for us, too.”
