Society of Game Developers Jamaica just released a showcase and accompanying sale of games made in the Caribbean called “Windies Direct” – a play on Nintendo’s indie-focused Directs.
The exhibition highlights game makers from a vibrant and creative community of people in the Caribbean and its diaspora who are making games independently — as full-time or part-time projects, or as a hobby.
Here is the Windies Direct video.
Glen Henry- founder of Spritewrench Studios and founder of the Jamaica Game Developers Society said it all started with a small group of friends, the online community and personally has grown to more than 300 members from Jamaica, Trinidad, Cayman Islands and in the American diaspora.
The fact is, there is a rapidly growing Caribbean eSports culture in mostly 15 Caribbean countries, Gregory More, Chairman of the Jamaica Sports Federation, told SiliconCaribe.
The culture of eSports has created an eSports Federation and made Jamaica the first Caribbean country to be accepted into the International Sports Federation (IEF) due to their long history of hosting tournaments. It has not been unusual for eSports events to have 300-500 Jamaican players participate.
Caribbean Sports Culture is on to something. It’s great to see that we’re not only consuming games, we’re creating them too!
