Winona State hosts Pumpkin Drop and STEM Carnival | Community

In celebration of National Chemistry Week and Halloween, Winona State University (WSU) will present the Third Annual Pumpkin Dots and STEM Carnival from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 29, in the Atrium at Science Laboratory Center.

This event is free and open to the public and will provide a fun-filled space for all ages to enjoy several events, science demonstrations and Halloween activities hosted by the WSU STEM Clubs.

The third annual Pumpkin Patch will feature the intersection of physics and chemistry. The experiment consists of throwing a regular pumpkin, followed by throwing a frozen pumpkin that has been filled with liquid nitrogen. Everyone who attends can expect to see different reactions of the pumpkins falling based on their temperature. The typical “splat” of a ripe pumpkin will be replaced by the “smashing” of a frozen pumpkin, as multiple orange pieces fly a great distance through the air.

The STEM Carnival will feature numerous science demonstrations, including pumpkin dropping, iron smelting, vacuum bazooka, potions and explosions. The carnival will also host various activity stations, from tie-dye, to DIY slime, paint art, pumpkin flasks, 3D printing and much more! Attendees are also invited to dress up and participate in a Halloween costume contest.
