MORGANTOWN, W.VA. – The second red shirt Abbey Yuhasz of the West Virginia University cross country team has been named the Big 12 Runner of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
“Abbey’s goal was to take last week’s race and improve on it,” Coach Sean Cleary said. “Saturday showed the progress she’s made over the last four weeks.”
The Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, native led WVU in the Go Fast River Run with a third-place finish.
Yuhasz finished the 6k on Lock Haven University’s West Branch XC course with a time of 21:48.3, breaking her career best in the process.
Beating 161 athletes, Yuhasz was the first of five climbers to cross the finish line.
Yuhasz is the eighth Mountaineer in program history to earn the weekly conference honor and the third Mountaineer to earn the honor this season. Second red shirt Megan Weaver won the award on Oct. 11 after leading West Virginia in the Carnegie Mellon Invitational. This marks the first season WVU has had three different redshirt junior Big 12 Runners of the Week Ceili McCabe also winning the award on October 4.
The Mountaineers return to action at the Big 12 Championships in Lubbock, Texas, on Friday, Oct. 28, at the Chaparral Ridge Cross Country Course. The women’s 6k starts at 10 a.m. ET.
